Beer Promotion Gives Lister A Big Break

An All-Canadian Band

  now they’re IN Canadian.
Cases, that is.
The Ottawa band is one of six groups chosen for the latest promotion from the brewers who brought you The Rant. Their song So Real was selected from the IndieBlast ’00 CD, which features 18 Canadian bands, for a CD which is packaged in some cases of Molson Canadian beer.
It’s great news for the local quartet, who will release their first full-length album Half Built Set in September. They play upcoming gigs at both Barrymore's and The Black Sheep.
“It’s great,” said drummer Marco Rayes of the Molson promotion. “We get a bit of money and some exposure.”
The exposure from both the beer campaign and the IndieBlast CD can only help the band as they try to market and sell their new CD, which Rayes describes as “a raw pop groove with a dancehall underbelly.”
“Speaking it sounds retarded,” said Rayes. “Maybe written down sounds a little better.”
While Lister — part of the Fresh Festival 2000 bill earlier this month — has been playing since the late ’90s, it’s taken a couple of years to get everything together for a full release.
“It’s really difficult to get things done without some money behind you, and a team,” said Rayes, whose band’s first big break came in ’98 when their song Half As Good was played on popular TV shows Dawson’s Creek and Party of Five.
But back then the band was known as Zoe. The name was changed shortly after they finally started getting some exposure due to confusion with other bands who had the same name — now, Lister is trying to re-establish its identity.
“No matter what we do, it’s always ‘the band formerly known as Zoe’,” said Rayes with a hint of laughter. “(Even Zoe) still means nothing to them.”
The song Half As Good, which still gets occasional play on local radio stations, will be part of the full album, but is not a featured song.
“We have much better songs now,” Rayes says. “It seems like a different era. The band has evolved a great deal, songwriting and in the studio especially.”
